Ranked #9 in Most Innovative Schools by U.S. News & World Report, St. John’s College has a long history of leadership in creative thinking and forward-looking initiatives. That spirit carried into the decision to pursue on-site solar generation following a thorough evaluation process, which ultimately led to the selection of Lightility as the project partner.
Lightility implemented a 347 kW solar array on Mellon Hall, a residence hall on campus, along with an additional 65 kW array at the Heating Plant using a ballasted racking system. The project was delivered as a fully turnkey solution, including financing, SRECs, and applicable tax benefits, resulting in zero upfront cost to the client.
Founded in Annapolis, Maryland in 1696, St. John’s College is a National Historic Landmark and the third-oldest college in the United States. The historic designation introduced unique site and installation considerations. Lightility’s prior experience completing solar installations at historically designated facilities, including the Frederick Douglass School in Baltimore, provided additional confidence throughout the selection and implementation process.
This solar project builds on Lightility’s ongoing relationship with St. John’s College. Previous work includes LED lighting upgrades for the campus Gymnasium and Boathouse, with additional LED upgrades currently underway in Spector Hall and Gilliam Hall.
